Week One - Short Story Complete
So I finished up early this week. I managed to write a 3,100 word short story and edit it. Is it perfect or publishable? I don't know, but I learned a lot about my writing style and direction that I would like to take my fiction. Let's call this first one a feasibility test.
The biggest thing I believe that I learned is how to go about refining my process. Here's what I did.
- Write the damn story as fast as I can so that I don't have time to re-think it.
- After the first draft is done, go over it for story flow (not grammar at this point).
- With this one, I tried the Motivation-Reaction Unit (MRU) method. I may stick with it or I may not, but either way it was fun.
- After the story was rearranged into MRUs, I looked it over for word choice and edited as necessary for flow and aesthetics.
- Finally, I did a quick copy edit to make sure that the story made sense grammatically.
I have sent the story to some close readers for initial feedback. After that round, I may branch out a little further or I may just leave it alone and treat it as a learning activity. Either way, I'll be able to get a jump start on next week's short story.
Now, if I only knew what it would be about.
